Introduction

The invention of the computer mouse was crucial for establishing the bridge between human and computer interaction. The computer mouse was invented in the early 1960s by Douglas Engelbart. A Pair of wheels was used in the first demo to translate movements in the X & Y directions. (SRI International, 2023) Engelbart’s invention made human and computer interactions easier than ever. It was the pioneer of future mouse development and evolved from using wheels to metal balls to laser sensors, and finally optic sensors. (Beschizza, 2007) The computer mouse has become a key component that has made the computer accessible to everyone. The wireless mouse is the latest invention and upgrade for the computer mouse. It is both very convenient due to the lack of wire or cord for connection. This paper provides a technical description of this crucial gadget, particularly, the Wireless Mouse 002 from Bambu Lab Global with an in-depth description starting from all the exterior components to interior components and their functionalities.

Bambu Lab Global is a tech company that mainly focuses on the creation of 3D models and 3D printers, but they also create mice and other computer accessories. Due to their usage of 3D printing, consumers get various customizing options. The Bambulab Wireless Mouse 002 is one of their cheapest and most accessible products. It combines the beauty of 3D art and modern hardware assembly to make a kit that gives users a unique experience. Due to its entire plastic body, it is lighter and compact in size. This device weighs around 33 grams and the dimensions are 100*69*35 mm. Bambu Lab provides a kit of different materials in the package for assembly. (Bambu Lab US)

Exterior Components

Figure 1: Top Case/Shell, Bottom Case/Shell, Battery holder (Source: Bambu Lab Website)

Top Case/Shell: All the interior parts of the Bambu Wireless Mouse are encased by a plastic shell. The shell is divided into two parts. The colors of the mouse can be any selected choice. In Figure 1 above, The top layout is orange and the bottom layout is gray colored. The top shell is shaped like a round bowl with two button-like cutouts on top that the user can press on. There is a large square cutout between the two buttons for the allocation of the scrolling wheel. There are many small holes all around the top shell. The reason behind these holes is to accommodate a lighter weight for easy movement. Inside the top shell, there are two very small screw holes.

Bottom Case/Shell: The bottom shell (Figure 1) is flat and has cutouts for where the optic lens and toggle switches for the Bluetooth connection are placed. A big cutout is made on the side for the battery placement. On the top of the bottom shell, it has a scroll wheel holder and 5 screw holes, two on top and three at the bottom for attachment to the top and interior case.

USB Receiver: One USB receiver (Figure 2) is included that is attached to the computer port for establishing a Bluetooth connection between the Bluetooth receiver on the PCB and the computer. USB receivers are compact in size, with around 3.11 x 2.48 x 0.67 inches of dimension. (Amazon)

Figure 3: Mouse Skates (Bambu Lab Website)

Mouse Skates: Underneath the bottom shell of the mouse, three mouse skates are attached that allow smooth movement on the surface. Mouse skates are usually made from Teflon and contain very low friction for effortless gliding on any surface. (Patterson, 2021) Although they come in various shapes and sizes, Bambulab provides small oval-shaped colored gliders.

Interior Components

Figure 4: Interior Case (Source: Bambu Lab Website)

Interior case: The mouse has another interior case (Figure 1) inside the first exterior that holds the inside components together and prevents them from moving or getting misaligned. It is smaller than the outer case and can also come in various colors. The shell has three big cutouts on top for the accommodation of scroll wheels and a connection between the button cutouts on the top shelf and the motherboard. It works together with the exterior cases to keep the mouse sturdy.

Figure 5: PCB Motherboard, Optic Sensor (Source: Youtube- “Wireless Mouse 3D Printing Kit – 002 – Bambu Labs”)

Bottom-side of PCB Motherboard: Inside the second case, there is a PCB Motherboard. It has two sides, upper and bottom parts. The bottom part of the PCB Motherboard is green and it controls and transfers all the electronic signals between the mouse and the computer(Figure 5). The motherboard is surrounded by electronic printing and a nonbinding copper-clad laminate that creates a network of small circuits. There are antennas inside the PCB motherboard that facilitate the Bluetooth connection between the USB receiver and the PCB motherboard. (Wang, 2024) PCB motherboard is used to register mouse clicks through electronic signals. (Kapuwatta, 2022)

Optical Sensor: An optical sensor is attached to the bottom of the PCB Motherboard. An optical sensor is a device that measures the number of light rays physically present and turns that information into an electrical signal that can be transferred using a PCB motherboard and interpreted by the computer. It uses infrared light to reflect off of surfaces and present information about the mouse’s movement (Ador et. al, 2023) Optical sensors can come in various shapes but the one included with Bambu Lab Wireless 002 has a square shape with a small dot in the middle for light projection.

Bluetooth Toggle Switch: The bottom part of the PCB motherboard also has a small metallic switch that is aligned with the exterior bottom case and used as a toggle switch for controlling the Bluetooth connection to the receiver.

Figure 6: Click buttons, Scroll Wheel button, and Scroll Wheel (Source: Youtube- “Wireless Mouse 3D Printing Kit – 002 – Bambu Labs”)

Upperside of PCB Motherboard: The part of the PCB that faces upward is tan-colored and contains some information about the board. There are two blue buttons that work as mouse buttons. It sends signals to the PCB motherboard for click registration. (Kapuwatta, 2022) In the middle, beside the cutouts for the scroll wheel placement, there is a button that is used as the scroll wheel button. Although there are numerous uses for the scroll wheel button, it is mainly used for ease of scrolling upwards and downwards in a document or webpage.  (“Using your mouse scroll wheel”, 2020) (Figure 5)

Scroll Wheel: The scroll wheel (Figure 5) is a black plastic wheel placed on a metal rod and it has a rubber surface outside. One side of the metal rod has a plastic box on top that engages with the scroll wheel button on the motherboard when the scroll wheel is pressed down. Rotating the wheel sends vertical scroll commands in many graphical desktop systems. (Deskthority wiki)

Wire Connector: At the end of the mouse, there is a wire connector where a red and black wire connects the motherboard to the battery in the battery holder cutout on the bottom shell that powers electricity to the entire PCB board.
